The National Lottery’s Big Night
Young Scots musicians prepare to perform

Young Scots musicians prepare to perform on BBC One at The National Lottery Awards 2010

A group of young musicians from the Highlands are gearing up to perform on BBC One at this year’s National Lottery Awards, the annual search to find the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects.

The Awards form part of a star-studded gala event, The National Lottery’s Big Night, which is hosted by John Barrowman and will be broadcast live on BBC One on Saturday 4 September.  As well as revealing the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects, for the first time the event will also include a special showcase performance from Lottery-funded groups.

Taking part in the showcase are four young fiddle players from the Gaelic arts body Fčisean nan Gŕidheal, which has received Lottery-funding.  Iain Macfarlane (17) from Ullapool and Sarah Barbour (22) from Inverness are regular Fčis Rois participants, whilst Catriona Murray (18) and Caitlin Sinclair (16) have recently taken part in the Fčis Chataibh Ceilidh Trail across Sutherland.

All four young musicians have played the fiddle from a young age and benefited from music tuition through Lottery-funded Fčisean nan Gŕidheal, the independent umbrella association of the Fčis movement – 42 Gaelic arts tuition festivals which take place throughout Scotland offering tuition to 13,000 young people annually.  The group will be travelling to London to perform at the televised event, alongside other Lottery-funded groups from across the UK who are all starring in the showcase performance, including fencers, drummers, aerialists and ballet dancers.

Sarah Barbour, who has taken part in Fčis activities for over ten years, says: ‘It’s so amazing to think that we will be performing on national television at The National Lottery Awards.  I’ve loved music since a very young age and it will be exciting to play a traditional instrument like the fiddle to such a massive audience.  I think we’re all a bit nervous but can’t wait to show what we can do!’

Arthur Cormack, Chief Executive of Fčisean nan Gŕidheal, says: ‘We’re delighted that these four young and very talented musicians are going to be appearing at this year’s National Lottery Awards representing the Fčis movement on national television.  Over the years, Lottery funding has greatly supported the Fčisean, improving the quality of our work and offering opportunities to young people.  The opportunity to celebrate that is great for these young musicians.’

Now in their seventh year, The National Lottery Awards recognise the difference that Lottery-funded projects, both big and small, make to local communities, and celebrate the achievements of the people behind them.  The Awards will be presented by celebrity guests including Kelly Brooke, William Roache MBE, Benedict Cumberbatch, Larry Lamb, Amir Khan, Julia Bradbury and Matt Baker, with live music performances from McFly and Taio Cruz.
